He started flying P-51 Mustangs in 1946. He served first with 20th FG flying P-51s and F-84 Thunderstreaks at Shaw Field, S. In 1948 he joined the 51st FG on Okinawa flying P-80s. In Korea (1953-54) he flew F-86 Sabre with 8th FBG. During his "navy" year (1954-55) he accomplished 71 carrier landings with F9F-6 Cougars and got this way U. Before his Vietnam tour (1967-68) he flew also USAF F-101 Voodoos, F-102 Delta Daggers and F-100 Super Sabres. In Vietnam he was awarded the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as F-4D Aircraft Commander over North Vietnam. This is size large 1957 manufactured MB-4 (P-4A) flight helmet.

The helmet has markings of hard use of fighters but it is a complete unit with an interesting oxygen mask receivers. MB-4 flight helmets were manufactured for a Strategic Air Command (SAC) but in this case this MB-4 has been modified for USAF fighter pilot John C. Bartholf with a visor so it is making this MB-4 helmet more interesting one.
