This helmet has a custom fit liner made for Robert L. By Protection, INC, California in 1969.
Bob graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1964 and very soon he was flying 510th TFS Huns already in Vietnam War at Bien Hoa. Later he flew FAC O-1s for Australians with USAF TACP 1 ATF 3/67 - 8/67. After his Vietnam tour he continued to fly Super Sabres at RAF Lakenheath. He was named as the 492nd TFS's "Top Gun" for the last 6 months of 1970.He earned same title already in 1969! Later he flew with 493rd TFS (dec 70 - Sept 71), 76th TFS, 461st TFS and at Tinker AFB as an A-7 test pilot where he ejected during take off while the wing of Corsair suddenly collapsed to "aircraft carrier parking" position! Anyway you can find many photos and stories about this man via Google.
The helmet is size LARGE and has user's name inside visor cover as well. Unfortunately I got this helmet without speakers, but it should not to be hard to find. In Europe are many potential buyers for these stuff paying better prizes. This helmet arrived also without mask, but I managed to fix a suitable MBU-5/P with correct dates (67/68/69) for this helmet.First I thought to add "205" for the mask, but I don't have photo confirmation if those numbers were used with masks as well. Camo painted visor cover has been taped with an electric tapes. So this is RAF Lakenheath's Top Gun Hun pilot used flight helmet from Vietnam War era. US dollar's rate is also pretty close of euro today.
Don't worry, I have time to sell those helmet the whole winter ;O. Maybe I will keep it myself because Vietnam war era named helmets with a history are hard to find here in Europe after all. It is RAF Lakenheath used helmet anyway by Vietnam War veteran and the fact is that I was looking a real F-100 Super Sabre helmet over 20 years for my collection and this is the first Hun helmet which I have ever owned. I got later 17th TRS RF-101 Voodoo pilot helmet used at Laon AFB, France, and while this user of the helmet has an interesting military caree first as an USMC soldier in Korean War, later as an USN submariner (USS Baleo) and finally as a Cold War recce pilot (RF-101 & RF-4) I decided to keep this helmet instead of Bob's helmet because I do have already Colonel "Punch" Jamison's camo HGU-2A/P in my collection and finally I got a right dated MBU-5/P for this helmet too with T-bayonets as well.
And "Digger's" Protection, INC made F-111 helmet for John Graves got also a great MBU-5/P mask with right dates so my mission is complished with primary targets and secondary targets which I used to make primarys 110% condition can go soon forward ;O.
