Historical Background: US Army Air Forces B-17 bombers ran a gauntlet of fire from flak and fighters in the hotly contested skies over Occupied Europe. The M4A2 flak helmet was developed to better protect B-17 pilots and air crews from "ack-ack" while in flight. The M4A2 was standardized in 1944, and though superseded in 1945, continued to be worn for the rest of the war. The M4A2 was a departure from the M-3 that preceded it and the M-5 that followed it, developed from the leather "Grow" helmet as opposed to the M-1 steel pot.
