US Air Force USAF 1950s FIGHTER PILOT ORANGE PAINTED P-4B FLIGHT HELMET Vtg RARE
US Air Force fighter pilots of the late 1950s often embellished their "bone dome" flight helmets with garish paint jobs for individual style. This US Air Force USAF 1950s FIGHTER PILOT ORANGE PAINTED P-4B FLIGHT HELMET is in good condition, with a period leather lace repair connecting the chinstraps, some crazing and darkening to the edge rim, a flame having been carved into the front left crown, some scratching and darkening around the exterior, some dark soiling to the chinstraps and interior suspension, the back ends of the sweatband remaining unsecured, missing the visor, missing the oxygen mask attachment tabs from the interior cheeks, missing the rivets for one of those tabs from the right cheek, missing the wiring, missing the interior ear cups and ear phones, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the helmet is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough fiberglass construction. Most interestingly, it's a Size Large, bears a garish period painted orange exterior finish, which extends to the metal visor track and brown rubber edge rim, and carries the classic "winged star" outline stamping of the U.
AIR FORCE in white on the brown leather interior top crown pad. It sports a fully intact brownish OD HBT nylon interior suspension, brown leather sweatband, and brown leather covered white nylon nape strap, features the original white canvas chinstraps, and boasts the original TYPE P-4B / CONSOLIDATED CONTROLS CORP. USAF nomenclature label inside, as well as a paper nomenclature tag attached to the interior left crown.
