From its inception in April 1944 to its deactivation in October 1944, Marine Fighter Squadron 482 (VMF-482) was strictly a replacement training unit, instructing USMC pilots on the F4U Corsair and SBD Dauntless to round out squadrons already deployed in the Pacific. This USMC Marine US WW2 VMF-482 STENCILED FIGHTER PILOT NAF 1092 FLIGHT HELMET is in good condition, with some cracking to the middle bottom back seam, some flattening to the crown, some dark soiling to the chamois lining, missing the chinstrap, missing the tightening laces from each side of the lower front, and with some scattered drying, scuffing, and age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the helmet is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough "pebbled" brown goatskin leather construction. Most interestingly, it's a Size 7 1/4, bears U.
" stamped at the back left crown, and carries "MAT. / 482 stenciled in yellow vertically along the middle back crown. The lack of initials and presence of squadron designation suggest this helmet was considered unit property. It boasts the classic front bill, triple crown seams, and goggle retention tabs at back, sports the original NAF 1092 / B-G.US Navy contract label inside, and is a fine example of a very rare, original USMC Marine US WW2 VMF-482 STENCILED FIGHTER PILOT NAF 1092 FLIGHT HELMET.
